The Joint Commission recently issued prepublication revisions to its hospital and critical access hospital standards. These revisions allow the standards to align with the revised Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements. Revisions are applicable to rehabilitation- and psychiatric- distinct part units within critical access hospitals that must comply with hospital conditions of participations. These changes are effective as of September 29, 2014.
For both programs, Joint Commission issued revisions to clarify the requirements of a practitioner not on the medical staff who is ordering outpatient services, governing body consultation with the medical staff, and medical staff structure for multi-hospital systems. The Joint Commission also added requirements for hospitals related to swing beds which allows the swing beds to be surveyed by the Joint Commissions as part of deemed status surveys.
