Nurses Week: Honoring the Power of Nursing

Nurses Week is an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary power of nursing: the compassion, resilience, and clinical expertise nurses bring to healthcare every day.

Throughout my career as a nurse and healthcare leader, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful nurses are in shaping patient outcomes and transforming the care experience. Nurses are caregivers, advocates, educators, and often the steady presence for patients and families during their most vulnerable moments. Their power is rooted not only in what they do, but in how deeply they understand patients, workflows, and the realities of care delivery.

That power, however, is not limitless. Increasing demands on nurses’ time, along with solutions that are too often designed without their input, can limit their ability to fully step into these critical roles.

This Nurses Week, as we celebrate the power of nursing, we must also focus on how that power is best unleashed: by giving nurses back time and ensuring they have a voice in creating the solutions meant to support them.

Powering the moments that matter

At symplr, we talk about creating “Moments That Matter.” For nurses, these moments are where their power is most visible and most impactful.

They are the moments when a nurse can be fully present with a patient or family member, not just as a clinician, but as a compassionate human being. Whether it’s sitting with a patient so they’re not alone, helping a family understand a diagnosis, or teaching someone how to manage care at home. These interactions may not always appear in metrics, but they define the patient experience and the nursing profession itself.

Today, those moments are increasingly competing with administrative complexity. Documentation requirements, fragmented communication, staffing coordination, and operational inefficiencies consume time and energy, limiting nurses’ ability to focus on the work that drew them to the profession.

When time is constrained and nurses are excluded from shaping how work gets done, the power of nursing is constrained.

Reducing burden and designing solutions with nurses

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years is that supporting nurses starts with removing unnecessary burdens. It also requires creating solutions with nurses, not for them.

Nurses bring invaluable insight into what works, what doesn’t, and what truly supports safe, high-quality care. When nurses are engaged as partners in designing workflows, processes, and technology, solutions become more practical, more effective, and more likely to be adopted.

Technology plays a critical role in this, but only when it is designed with clinicians in mind and informed by their lived experience. When implemented thoughtfully, technology can:

  • Reduce time spent on scheduling and staffing coordination
  • Streamline communication across care teams
  • Provide actionable insights that support clinical decision-making
  • Eliminate redundant or manual administrative tasks

The goal is not to add more systems, but to create a connected, intuitive environment where technology works in the background and reflects the realities of nursing practice. When nurses help shape these solutions, technology becomes an enabler rather than a barrier, amplifying their power. help shape these solutions, technology becomes an enabler rather than a barrier, and their power is amplified.

The impact of empowered, engaged nurses

When nurses have time and a voice, their power extends even further.

Patients who feel seen and supported are more likely to engage in their care and follow treatment plans. Families feel more confident and informed during critical moments. Care teams communicate more effectively and function with greater trust and clarity.

At the same time, reducing administrative burden and involving nurses in solution design is essential to addressing one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare today: clinician burnout. Sustaining the power of nursing means valuing nurses not only as caregivers, but as innovators and collaborators.

We cannot solve workforce challenges without addressing how nurses spend their time or without listening to those who know the work best. When we give nurses both time and influence, we strengthen the entire healthcare system.

This Nurses Week, we honor the power of nursing: the skill, compassion, and leadership nurses bring to healthcare every day. We celebrate nurses not only for the care they provide, but for the insight and expertise they bring as partners in shaping better systems of care. When we recognize nurses, invest in them, and include their voices in creating solutions, we don’t just say thank you; we strengthen healthcare for everyone.
