Depending on which part of the hospital you work in, credentialing means different things. When you talk to the Medical Staff Services department, they’ll tell you it’s all about primary source verification and committee approvals for provider appointments. When you talk to Revenue Cycle Managers, they’ll tell you it means enrolling providers with payors. Talking to the Supply Chain, they’ll tell you it refers to screening a potential sales rep. But the basic definition is still the same: credentialing is verifying someone’s qualifications, background, and achievements in order to determine if they are suitable for something.

One Complete Credentialing Solution

These different ideas of healthcare credentialing recently came together when Medkinetics and Payor Enrollment Services merged with Vendor Credentialing Service (VCS) to form the new company, symplr.

VCS has its origins in credentialing medical sales reps. However, it has recently expanded to credentialing other healthcare populations, including traveling nurses, medical and nursing students, non-medical staff, volunteers, and contractors.

There are a couple other differences between the Medkinetics and VCS products:

  1. VCS is tailored to handle the lighter credentialing needs of non-providers. It doesn’t contain the features that Medkinetics offers to manage committees, grant privileges, and conduct peer reviews. Instead, its solutions focus more on managing compliance and access.

  2. VCS offers a CVO-like service along with its software. The VCS Credentialing Team verifies all submitted credentials (such as immunization records and background check) using industry best practices.
